Monthly Pet Tips

April is National Heartworm Awareness Month, which aims to raise awareness of this serious condition that affects dogs and cats. Heartworm disease can cause severe damage to the heart, lungs, and other organs. This potentially fatal disease can affect any dog or cat, regardless of location or lifestyle. Prevention is critical as treatment can be invasive and expensive.

Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes carrying heartworm larvae. Signs and symptoms may include, but are not limited to coughing, lethargy, decreased appetite, swollen abdomen, unexplained weight loss, shortness of breath, and more. Preventative measures for your pet include:

  • Use a heartworm preventative medication year-round, as prescribed by a veterinarian

  • Have your pet tested for heartworms annually

  • Keep your pet's mosquito exposure to a minimum

Please contact your vet with any questions you may have regarding heartworm disease and your pet.
